Gluten what? Gluten who? GLUTEN FREE!

Im sure that some of you may know what Celiac Disease is but, for the ones that dont know what it is, i will fill you in! Its a condition that damages the lining of the small intestine and prevents it from absorbing parts of food that are very important for staying healthy! The damage is due to a reaction to eating Gluten, witch is found in wheat, barley, rye and possibly oats! Going Gluten free is the only medically accepted treatment for Celiac Disease!

What you Probably dont know is that Gluten can be found in a lot more products then you think, not just bread! Like some canned fruits and veggies could have it in there syrups! Processed lunch meat, hot dogs, sausages and frozen dinners containing meat usually include gluten, unless they are labeled otherwise! Condiments, including soy sauce, ketchup, white vinegar, mustard, malt, horseradish and curry powder may contain gluten and should be avoided! any beverages containing malt, including malted hot chocolate, malted milkshakes, some chocolate milk, beer and ale. Additionally, alcoholic beverages containing rye, wheat, oats, barley or buckwheat must be avoided. Beverages that may also contain gluten include instant coffee and root beer.

As you can see it can be a very hard life to live if you have to read labels so thats why im here Crazy Savings Mama (super hero music playing the background) In this blog i will give some tips, links, recipes and even a list of products that you can find in a store near you! So grab yourself a glass of 8th Continent Soymilk and get cozy because i am ready to fill your heads with lots of fun stuff!

Another know name in the stores near you would be Newmens Own, they have Gluten free salad dressings and one of mine and my kids favorite snack ever is Pop corn.. thats right they have a gluten free pop corn, witch can be bought off of walmart.com!

Tips On How To Determine If A Product Is Gluten-Free

The best way to determine if a product is gluten-free is to contact the manufacturer. Reading labels only tells part of the story; you can determine if a food contains gluten by looking at the label, but you cannot determine if it is gluten-free; this is true even with the labeling law that went into effect in January 2006: only wheat is specified on the label, not barley, oats, or rye. Very small amounts of ingredients may not be listed on the label; products may also be processed with ingredients (i.e., flour on the conveyor belt) that are not listed on the label or processed in a facility that also processes gluten-containing products, and this is not always listed on the label.
First thing, check the label to see if it says “gluten-free” anywhere. This can be on the front, back, by the ingredients, buried in a paragraph of information about how great the product is, in big letters, in small letters; there is no standard. Even if it says gluten-free, you still have to check the label. Some manufacturers consider their products gluten-free, even if they contain wheat, as long as they test at below 20 parts per million of gluten. For some people who only avoid most gluten, this may be acceptable, but for most celiacs it is not.
If the label does not state that the product is gluten-free, read through the ingredient list for obvious sources of gluten. Direct mention of wheat, rye, or barley means the food contains gluten and is not suitable for a gluten-free diet. Oats is also a questionable ingredient as well because of the likelihood of oats containing gluten through cross contamination. All other foods should be checked in one of the following ways to determine if the product is gluten-free.
If the label states that the product is processed in a facility that also processes wheat or if it is produced on the same lines as a product that contains wheat or gluten, the product should not be considered gluten-free without further investigation, even if the label indicates that good manufacturing processes are used to separate ingredients (more about this below). In many cases, these products may be acceptable, so don’t eliminate a product just because of that statement. Once you have determined by examining the label that the product contains no obvious gluten, you must begin to investigate the product.

When you get a prescription filled, be sure to ask the pharmacist if it is gluten-free. A good pharmacist will call the manufacturer to determine if is gluten-free for you. You can also check out www.glutenfreedrugs.com for more information about gluten in drugs. There are a few online lists, such as Clan Thompson, that list pharmaceuticals. Stokes Pharmacy in New Jersey will formulate gluten-free drugs for you if none are commercially available.

my goodness... that was a load of information in short amount of time... if you have any questions or think that you may have Celiac Disease consult your PCP and get all the information you need from them! I hope this helps a little bit!

Dinner for cheap.. Yes please...

Ok I know there are some, ok a lot of people out there that don't have a lot of time on your hands to make a good healthy dinner at home, so we all know what normally happens, take out or fast food! Am I guilty of that? Heck yes! But I try to cook at home to save money and it works, its cheap and it is quick, if you pick the right recipes! I spent less then 50.00 for all of the ingredients for my dinners this week! I will list them here and if you would like the recipe let me know! With my two boys, and my husband that has, at times, no idea as to what time he will be home, I need to cook something that is quick and easy, so tonight i have a new recipe for French Onion Pork Roast... you probably think that holly crap a pork roast will take forever to cook and your right but not if you start it in the morning with your crock-pot! So that salves the quick part now the cheap all it takes is French onion soup, a large sweet onion, some chicken stock, baby carrots, red potatoes, and a pork roast! Now the pork roast was 9.00, and with all the veggies and soup that was around 9.00 as well so for under 20.00 for a family of 4 plus leftovers this is a go to meal for me! Tonight is the taste test so I will post that later! Now for the list of my dinners:

Tonight: French Onion Pork Roast
Tuesday: Biscuits and Gravy with Hash Browns and Eggs
Wednesday: Stuffed Shells with Garlic toast
Thursday: Cheesie Chicken Skillet
Friday: Spaghetti with maple sausage
Saturday: Hamburger Cheesie Skillet
Sunday: Salisbury Steak with Crinkle cut Fries
Monday: Creamy Basil Chicken with Mixed Veggies

This my list for this week... and it may not go as planed because my husband tends to want to go to dinner most Fridays after work! So we'll see but i will definitely let everyone know how dinner turns out tonight!
If any of your out there who ever you are have any good recipes that are quick, easy, and cheap please let me know i am up to try anything!

sickness runs deep....

Well as most of you know I have two little boys, Hayden is 4 and Carter is 2! As much as I love my kids there is one thing that I hate about them, and not in a mean way, I hate when they get sick, because there is only oh so much that I can do for them and it breaks my heart everytime one does! Like today my little guy Hayden had a great day at the Ruitan Christmas party, making crafts playing games and seeing Santa, until, as we where putting our coats on to go home, he layed his head on the table and said he was tired! I looked at him and said I know buddy we are going home... needless to say we did not make it to the exit before everything that he had eaten or even drank came back up.... I, on the spot started to cry because I hate when my babies get sick! We are now home and everyone is asleep, as for me I'm watching Julie, Julia for the millionth time, thinking about all the coupons that I have to go threw tommorow and all the price matching I have to do! On top of that I have to get all my lists together as to what we are taking on our trip to FL at Christmas, and what to pack, who's watching the house, and how much food to pack for pepper for a 2 week stay with my dad... Iv got a busy life but man I love it! Tomorrow I will be reviewing the hair spray I bought the other day so stay tuned, and thanks to whom ever is out there reading this!

An early Christmas.....

How much do I love my husband? Well after last night I love him more then life its self.... for two reasons... one, he gave me an early Christmas gift! What is it you may ask? Well he got me a Kindle Fire! Omg iv wanted one of these since it came out, and talked about it to him all the time, see ladys when you think your husbands are not listening to you talk your wrong, they do listen, and this is the proof! The second reason is that last night we attended my husbands company Christmas/40 years dinner, which may I add was very nice for the whole family, at the dinner his boss was handing out awards and the very first one that he had was for, The safest crew of the year! Can you guess who won? If you cant guess then I will tell you... lol my husband won! I am such a proud wife, and the boys are so proud of there daddy!

Now I know this has nothing about savings or coupons in it but I thought that would add something a little different now and again! Lol. I hope everyone has a great day I'm off to make a cake for my dads birthday!
